Monarch Migration - Cape May, NJ

The event was held on Saturday, September 28, 2019 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Monarchs and photographers make good partners. Join us at Cape May Lighthouse as large numbers of Monarchs make a brief stop before continuing the migration across the Delaware Bay on their journey south.
Also - with a little luck - we will also witness the annual migration of hawks. For more information visit

Driving to Cape May Lighthouse takes about 2.5 hours from Exton. We will have carpooling from Exton Panera (Panera Bread, 151 East Swedesford Rd, Exton, PA 19341) leaving at 6.30am. While that certainly is earlier than most outings it should allow us to get to Cape May while it is still cool, not too windy and with early-day lighting.

- And if chasing monarchs isn't enough then there are a few other events:

  • There may be a hawk banding beginning at 10 am.  It is not on the schedule yet, but it has been done over the past several years.
  • There will be a Monarch Tagging demonstration from 2-2:45 pm.  This is a fascinating thing to see being done!
  • Cape May Bird Observatory/Northwood Center (CMBO) will have a live monarch butterfly chrysalis display set up within their shop.  This is a fascinating way to see the monarchs emerge from the chrysalis (if we’re lucky to be there at the right time).  The address of the CMBO is 701 Eastlake Drive, CM, NJ (not far from the CM lighthouse).  Hours - 9:30-4:30.

Carpool will leave Cape May for Exton after lunch at Exit Zero Filling Station at 110 Sunset Blvd, Cape May, NJ 08204 (very close to the Cape May Lighthouse.)

Bring your favorite equipment for butterfly and bird photography and footwear for walking on the wetland-trails and / or the beach.

Please confirm to Svenne Juul in advance whether you are interested in car-pooling, and if you would be willing to drive if additional vehicles are required.

The timing of this event is subject to change if either whether or monarchs aren't cooperating. The final confirmation of the timing will be given to all participants no later than Friday 9/27/2019 at 3pm. Therefore please confirm your planned attendance to Svenne Juul before Friday 8/27/2019 at 3pm either by direct email to or by using the RSVP function on our meetup here.
