Steel Stacks in Bethlehem

The event was held on Thursday, October 17, 2019 from 1:30 PM to 7:00 PM.

We will carpool from Exton to Bethlehem, PA, home of the towering Steel Stacks, a series of five blast furnaces that were used in the iron making process at Bethlehem Steel for decades.  A raised walkway, designed to be part museum, part community recreation resource and part attraction provides easy viewing and photographing the imposing structures and lots of colorful rust.  The site includes a Visitor Center with public restrooms, and there is free parking.

An optional side trip will be to Saint Michael’s Cemetery, the site where acclaimed photographer Walker Evans took the iconic photograph, “Bethlehem Graveyard and Steel Mill. Pennsylvania” in 1935.  Quaint headstones dot the hillside that overlook the city below and the looming Steel Stacks.

SPECIAL BONUS!  For those who wish to stay into the evening, CCCC members have been invited as guests of the Lehigh Valley Photography Club to attend their presentation by Internationally-acclaimed photographer Denise Ippolito.  Denise will present  “The Art of Composition”, a 60-minute slideshow presentation based on composition as an art form. She will discuss the many ways that she approaches the topic both in-the-field and at the computer. Her images from around the world will reflect her love of nature, art and photography.  After Steel Stacks, we will have a few options for dinner locations, and then relocate cars just a few blocks away to the Banana Factory, for the 7pm photography club meeting.

Carpools will be coordinated to for those who wish to stay into the evening for the photography presentation, and for those who wish to head back home after enjoying the Steel Stacks.  Carpool will leave from the Exton Panera at 1:30, and we should arrive at Steel Stacks by 2:45.  if you wish to drive on your own, plan to meet us at the Steel Stacks Visitor Center at 2:45.  We plan to shoot in the Steel Stacks area until about 5:30, so if you do not stay for the evening presentation, you should be back in Exton by around 7pm.  If you wish to stay and take advantage of the invitation to see Denice ippolito's presentation, we can grab a bite to eat at a restaurant cafe in the Steel Stacks complex, then take a short ride a few blocks away for the 7pm presentation.  The Lehigh Valley website says their meetings go from 7pm to 9pm, so you can expect to get back to Exton around 10:30pm.  Contact Jim Wilson at if you plan to attend.
