These are also a little known part of the American Revolution. They were the first motorized transport of the US Army. They were the equivalent of today's humvees and were used to transport Washington and his generals around the battlefield. (The British, meanwhile, because of their supply chain were limited to golf carts.) These important parts of American history have shamelessly been left to rust away in Valley Forge National Park. Sad.
